About this place
Down a backstreet in Monzennakachō, Honogure Shōten welcomes guests to a counter with room for about 4 people. Here, beans are ground to order and coffee is brewed by hand. The house blend comes hot, with a relaxed choice of 3 flavour profiles: “sour”, “regular” or “bitter”. Its satisfying depth pairs well with the old-fashioned, unfussy pudding. Served in a small dish, the pudding is pleasantly firm, with bittersweet caramel and gentle sweetness that linger alongside the coffee.
For a light bite, there is a selection of toasted sandwiches. The red bean and butter sandwich stands out: gently sweet homemade chunky bean paste meets the savoury saltiness of melting butter, all tucked into crisp bread. For something more savoury, try ham and cheese or chicken and egg with soy-sauce glaze—both good choices for a small afternoon meal.
Beyond the café menu, the offerings include tea from Shimane, chai, wine and stout, as well as small bites such as stem-on raisins. With a book from the counter to browse, a quiet coffee alone makes a restful pause during a stroll through the old town.
